as a high school student in china， i had to concentrate on the college entrance examination （cee）， even so， books not related to the exams were never excluded from my life. unfortunately when sitting in the exam in june， 20xx， i was so nervous that i didn’t score well in the cee exam. i enrolled in the department of computer science in zhejiang college of traditional chinese medicine. any attempt to persuade myself to focus on my major turned out to be a failure at the beginning of my college life. after several terms， i realized that i would never be interested in being a programmer or an engineer. at that moment， i lost my direction and objectives.

my persistence in reading saved me from the dark situation. as a matter of fact， i enjoyed reading the books included encyclopedia american， and some books about management by peter f.drucker. i began to notice something interesting： why some companies can produce more than others？ why some company can sell more than others？ why some companies can build up but others cannot when facing the same difficulties？

with the questions in my mind， i started to read many relevant books. i was lucky to read the book “jack： straight from the gut”by jack welch， in which john a. byrne makes a clear illustration that the management is important for a company. when i was a junior， i ran a bookshop by myself near my school. i should manage not only the finance in the shop but also the employees in my shop even made some strategies to enlarge the business in my shop to hold on the run the shop. from this， my interpersonal skills and the capacity in business has been greatly developed， definitely i was increasingly interested in what i was doing. by december， 20xx， i had finally determined to take business management as my career instead of it. to accumulate more relevant knowledge， i strived to gain more practical work experience in some big companies.

fortunately， as a senior， i began by conducting an internship in the architecture company in zhejiang province. over six months， i worked as an assistant of the manager to harmonize the relationship between the different departments in this company and to draft some management system， which broadened my perspective of management conditions and business performance in different industries. the experience showed me that management is much more important than that of i thought in big companies. after graduation， i continued my work in this company. in may， 20xx， the company offered me an opportunity to participate in an training program held by a famous management school. through in-depth discussions with teachers and students in the classes， they all encouraged me to pursue my future career in management field because of my intellectual ability and the brand new ideas i mentioned.

要回答這些問題的確是不容易的,但你必須在正式寫作自述之前全面準(zhǔn)備,對這些問題加以認(rèn)真思考,因?yàn)槟愕淖允鲂枰卮鹚羞@些問題或其中的大部分。

對內(nèi)容有了把握后,就是要注意寫作技巧了。這里說的寫作技巧不是英語水平的問題,而是寫作的思路、取材和段落的安排。寫自述的最大忌諱就是寫得毫無特色、枯燥乏味。要知道每一個(gè)錄取評審委員需要閱讀成百上千份自述,其中大多數(shù)的自述的內(nèi)容都是雷同的,他們不可能有時(shí)間、精力和氣力在平淡中尋找不尋常,努力發(fā)掘你的優(yōu)秀之處。要寫得醒目,抓住讀者的注意力,這個(gè)責(zé)任完全在于你自己。

所以,自述的第一段或者是前二段至為重要。這頭一、二段必須能夠引起讀者對你的興趣,并且能夠得到關(guān)于你個(gè)人的最重要的信息。如果你的頭一、二段的內(nèi)容中有閃光之處,能夠給人留下不可磨滅的印象,那就達(dá)到了最佳效果。絕大多數(shù)的申請者的的確確有著類似的學(xué)歷和工作背景,而且現(xiàn)在又追求一個(gè)共同的目標(biāo):攻讀研究生。在這樣的情況下,讀者應(yīng)該不難想見,不論我們是漢語,還是用英語,描述自己的經(jīng)歷和追求的語匯和句式終究會趨向雷同。編者所強(qiáng)調(diào)的'獨(dú)特性',決不是僅指在語言上要獨(dú)樹一幟。獲得獨(dú)特性的更重要的有兩個(gè)方法:一是尋找獨(dú)特的思想方法或者說是審視自己的獨(dú)特角度,二是在陳述過程中采用故事手法。

采取第一種方法時(shí)我們從多種角度著眼確定文章的基調(diào),我們在此對三種較常見的類型寫作時(shí)所應(yīng)遵循的策略進(jìn)行簡要論述:

1.克服生活中的逆境型:peterson's guide中曾經(jīng)登載的一封外國人申請時(shí)寫的自述,作者的家庭背景是貧苦的、不識英文的第一代亞裔移民。作者沒有回避自己多花了幾年時(shí)間才完成大學(xué)的教育并且成績較差這一慘痛的事實(shí),而是就此問題展開對自己的介紹。他的家庭貧困,作為長子肩負(fù)幫助父母撫養(yǎng)年幼的妹妹的重任。這樣,完成大學(xué)教育對他來說需要艱苦卓絕的努力。因此,通過他的敘述,一位奮斗不息、刻苦耐勞并具有高度責(zé)任感的年輕人的形象躍然紙上。

這位作者申請的學(xué)校是法學(xué)院,難度較大,但作者有力地陳述了他的理由:他的父母像許多亞裔移民一樣,不通英文,更不懂在美國用法律的手段來保護(hù)自己的權(quán)益。他現(xiàn)在申請讀法學(xué)院,目的就是為了將來能夠運(yùn)用法律的武器維護(hù)在美國少數(shù)族裔的權(quán)益。

我們的assignment通常分為兩種形式，一是essay, 一是report.二者在形式上有所差別，,但大體相同。assignment上面會對寫成essay還是report格式作出明確要求。在閱讀題目時(shí)，請盡量仔細(xì)。

相同點(diǎn)：

1、字體：times new roman, 字號：小四， 行距：1.5倍。請有寫作之前就把這些格式調(diào)好，以避免寫好后再調(diào)會出現(xiàn)一些意相不到的'情況。

2、段與段之間隔行。每段不要求像中文寫作那樣空兩格，而是直接頂格寫。

下面還有一些相同點(diǎn)，我在兩種文體分開討論時(shí)，再涉及。

區(qū)別：

essay:

essay的寫作相對report要簡單一些。通常只包括三個(gè)部分，introduction, main body, conclusion. introduction 包括topic的背景介紹和文章要解決的主要問題。一般占總字?jǐn)?shù)的10%左右。main body是主體部分，占總字?jǐn)?shù)80%左右。如果題目中作了具體要求，就根據(jù)題目提到的幾個(gè)方面來逐一討論就可以了。有的題目沒有作具體要求，就根據(jù)自己的構(gòu)思來寫。但要求有邏輯性。conclusion也是占10%，在這一段里把文章中的主要觀點(diǎn)用一到兩句話概括出來。

essay 可以不寫題目，不要把小標(biāo)題加粗。

reference的寫作是兩種形式都要涉及的，我放在最后來詳細(xì)說。

first， new zealand is a multicultural country， which has the most advanced education in the world. second， the tuition is lower than other countries’， which i think is more reasonable for me. finally， the climate of new zealand is similar with the climate of the south of china. considering above reasons， i told my parents my plan on going to new zealand for study， and my parent agreed with me.
